Character Does Matter School Information
Thank you for accepting the “If Not Me, Then Who…” Service Challenge! The concept is simple. Go out into your community and give back through service in honor of your school's fallen hero.
The 2011/2012 school year is coming to an end! Check out the most current "If Not Me, Then Who..." Service Challenge guidelines.
Recognition and Scholarship Opportunities
Each student who meets the requirement by the deadline will receive a certificate of completion, endorsed by both The Travis Manion Foundation and the White House Joining Forces initiative. Students who receive the certificate will be able to state they successfully completed the Travis Manion Foundation “If Not Me, Then Who…” Service Challenge on their college admission applications, résumés, cover letters, or applications to graduate school as a way to show their commitment to community service.
Middle and High School Students
The Travis Manion Foundation will select three individuals to receive college scholarships. Two students will receive $2,500 and one student will receive a scholarship for $5,000 along with the Travis Manion Foundation “If Not Me, Then Who…” Young Leader Character Award. Scholarship recipients will be recognized at the foundation’s first annual “If Not Me, Then Who…” Gala on Dec. 6, 2012 at the Union League in Philadelphia.
College, University, and Trade School Students
If a minimum of 50 college, university, or trade school students complete the “If Not Me, Then Who…” Service Challenge, and submit the required materials by the Sept. 15, 2012 deadline, The Travis Manion Foundation will select one individual to receive a $5,000 college scholarship. In addition to the scholarship, this student will be recognized at the first annual foundation’s first annual “If Not Me, Then Who…” Gala on Dec. 6, 2012 at the Union League in Philadelphia, where they will be presented with an award for their Outstanding Service Honoring a Fallen Hero.
Service Challenge and Requirements
Service Challenge:
We encourage students to go into their communities and serve. We suggest a minimum of 15 hours of service. Students can take advantage of pre-established local volunteer opportunities or come up with an innovative service project. Students who demonstrate leadership and ingenuity will be favored for scholarships.
Some past ideas have been: care package drives, community gardens, park or school cleanups, etc. A volunteer resource guide is available upon request. This is your chance to come up with a way to give back and honor those who have made the ultimate sacrifice. Those who stand out the most in terms of having gone above and beyond in honoring their fallen hero will be chosen by the foundation as recipients for the scholarship.
Requirements:
Demonstrate outstanding community service in honor of your school's fallen hero by the Sept. 15, 2012 deadline to qualify for the challenge. You should email your essay/summary/reflection of service to CDM@travismanion.com. Note: picture essays, videos, and multimedia alternatives are accepted. We strongly encourage you to blog about your experience. Your submission should contain your name, your fallen hero, your school, your grade, and focus on your experience serving your community in their honor.
